AFL-CIO President touts Keystone XL

WATCH: Growing bipartisan voices say Keystone XL is the key to energy security
Support for Keystone XL only continues to grow in the New Year. Over the past few weeks, leaders in business and labor communities have come together once again to tout the benefits of a pipeline would bring tens of thousands of jobs, significant economic growth, and put the U.S. on the path to energy security.
Of note, President of the AFL-CIO Richard Trumka offered strong support for Keystone XL this week, highlighting that the pipeline will be environmentally sound and create thousands of jobs for union workers:
“Anything that makes sense and creates jobs and is sound environmental policy as well, we will be doing it. [With respect to] the XL pipeline, there’s no environmental reason that it can’t be done safely while at the same time creating jobs,” Trumka said.
His statement builds on the steadfast support for Keystone XL from labor and union members who have rallied across the country and in front of the White House to tell President Obama to say yes to Keystone XL jobs.
Of course Trumka’s comments come just as the President of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Tom Donohue said that approval of Keystone XL is a top priority for 2014. President of the American Petroleum Institute, Jack Gerard, also put the spotlight on the importance of Keystone XL in his State of American Energy speech. As he explained,
“The fact is, with a single word, yes, the president could allow this vital infrastructure project – paid for by the private sector and without a dime of taxpayer money – to move forward and provide thousands of good paying jobs for many years to come.”
Together, union and labor groups, business groups, and industry are asking the same question: every environmental question has been answered so why continue to deny workers good paying jobs?
